Hearers on a phone: Question 1 of the Shorter Catechism, half recalled

“And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children.”

Deuteronomy 6:6–7

Learn the catechism by heart.

Hearers helps you memorise the catechisms, the confessions, the creeds and Scripture. You learn one clause at a time, and each clause comes back just before you forget it.

Free. No account. Your progress stays in your browser.

Flashcards fail on long answers. Hearers learns them in parts, and then puts the parts back together.

A flashcard tests a whole answer. In a long answer, one missed phrase fails the card. The schedule is then always wrong, and the answer never sticks.

Hearers splits each answer into clauses of about eight words. Each clause has its own schedule. When every clause is stable, you recite the whole answer with nothing on the screen.

The schedule uses FSRS, a modern spaced-repetition algorithm. You do not grade yourself. Hearers grades each clause from the words you get right.

How it works

Four steps take a new answer from the page into your memory.

A review starts at the last step. It hides only the clauses that are due, and it shows the rest as context.

  1. The read stage, with the clauses of the answer tinted

    Read

Read the whole answer. Tints show where each clause starts. Tap Listen to hear it.

  2. The trace stage, with faint words and the current word outlined

    Trace

Type through the answer with the words shown faintly. One key for each word.

  3. The fade stage, with every other word hidden

    Fade

Half the words go. Type the answer again, and fill the gaps from memory.

  4. The recall stage, with the answer hidden and two clauses graded

    Recall

Every word goes. Type the answer or say it aloud. Each clause gets its own grade.

Features

Memorise the words, and know where they come from.

The Shorter Catechism is 107 answers. That is a long road. These tools keep you on it.

  1. A phrase of an answer with its proof texts open below it

    Proof texts in place

Hearers attaches each proof text to the phrase that it supports. Tap the phrase to read the passage. Add any verse to your own list.

  2. The progress page with a streak, an activity grid and a forecast

    Progress you can see

A streak, a grid of your review days, and a forecast of the answers due in the next two weeks.

  3. An answer with a memory aid and a trouble spot

    Help where you slip

Hearers finds the clauses that you forget again and again. Practise them on their own, and add a memory aid to the answer.

About

Free, and it stays free. No advertisements, no accounts, no cookies.

The early church called its new learners “hearers”. They heard the faith taught aloud, and they said it back until they knew it by heart. That is how this app teaches.

Luke Boyle makes Hearers. It is free for anyone to use. The source code is on GitHub, at github.com/3stacks/hearers.

If Hearers helps you, you can support it on Ko-fi. The support pays for the server and for the time to add more texts.
